I worked in a smoothie shop for a few years in high school (hint: we're the "king" of the frozen fruit concoctions), and made a whole lot of smoothies with the industrial vitamix blenders we had. I picked up one of these a few years ago on woot, and I think it is an ideal blender for home use. The jar is polycarbonate, which allows it to be quite large without being extra heavy. Like all other blenders it can form an air bubble near the blade for mixtures with too much ice or too little dietary fiber, but just knocking on the side of the jar is usually enough to dislodge it. It has only as many settings as you need, and the motor inside never seems to be over-strained. The ice chip makes an awful racket, but produces amazingly fine flakes of ice, comparable to shaved ice. The base removes easily without any tools which makes is very easy to clean.

After doing some extensive research for a protein powder that was not full of added sugar OR artificial sweeteners, I came across this Jillian Micheal's product. It is sweetened with Stevia and has only 100 calories per scoop, so I gave it a try. For the last two weeks I have started my day with one of the two following smoothies:

1. 1 scoop of the whey protein powder, 1 whole banana, 4 frozen strawberries, and a half cup to cup of unsweetened coconut milk (depending on how thick I want it to be)

2. 1 scoop of whey powder, 1 whole cup of mixed frozen berries (raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries), and 1/2 cup of unsweetened coconut milk.

I drink this while I get ready for work, which is around 7:20 am, and I stay full until around 12:30 when I typically leave my office for lunch. What's more is that I am never famished at lunch time, just normal-hungry. I have been having a serving of lean protein such as fish or chicken along with a generous side of veggies and some whole grain carbs for lunch, string cheese or 90 calorie granola bar for a snack, and similar dinner, and have lost 8 pounds in two weeks.

I do exercise when I have the motivation and have even had one of these smoothies afterwards, too. I strongly believe that they are keeping me full and energized from breakfast until lunch, which helps me eat less throughout the day. I am also loving that I can get a full serving of fruit into my daily diet, something I would never do unless I was drinking these smoothies.

I have not had this powder with water and don't think I would want to. I enjoy it as a creamy boost to a healthy breakfast that is fast and easy. It's also quite affordable at around $10 a container. One container has 15 servings, so each serving costs aprox. $.66 cents. I figure that the total cost of my daily breakfast is about $1.50 at most and is a lot more nutritious than a drive thru breakfast or even a bowl of oatmeal.

This has rapidly become my 'staple' shake of choice. I've tried a few others (including HempShake..not so tasty) but I keep coming back to this. I always make it with skimmed milk; tried water as they suggest in the instructions...not so nice!
The most important factors for me with this shake are the very low sugar content (contains stevia and is nice and sweet), high protein content (23g in the two scoops I use to make my shake) and high fiber content; together these mean that I can have one of these in the morning and not feel hungry until early afternoon. One benefit I've noticed (may be imaginary) is that drinking water after this shake keeps me feeling full for longer compared to others. Amazing book. I am on day 8 and have lost 7 pounds and feel great. I am 5' 3" and started at 140lbs but this morning I weighed 132.8. I am not a fan of fad diets, especially when celebrities are involved, because I always assume it's just an attempt to make money. However, after reading the whole book I do believe Harley is an expert and his plan is exactly what he says it is; a reset for the whole body and an easy way to lose weight fast for those of us who are too impatient to stick with a more traditional plan of losing 1 pound a week. The only con to this diet is the planning involved for meals and groceries-I only shop once a week though so I had to choose all the smoothie and meal recipes I want ahead of time. Regardless, the results are worth it. I feel great and am motivated to continue. Highly recommend this.

Hello Raw Cacao Lovers!

Here is the real truth about vitamin C (ascorbic acid) content in Raw Cacao:

Despite the trafficked reports circulating the internet, the honest truth remains: even when processed at low temperatures (i.e. "raw"), there is no vitamin C (ascorbic acid) present in cacao.

Recently, highly trafficked websites such as[...] have highlighted the misinformation of cacao's supposed vitamin C content. Included in these reports are claims that raw cacao is "extraordinarily high in vitamin C."

Back in 2004, our Navitas Naturals lab tests directly looked for vitamin C content in raw cacao, but came up negative. Despite these results, the current media blitz brought us back again for another round of lab testing of our best-selling raw cacao products (beans, nibs and powder) for vitamin C. This time, we used two different laboratories instead of one, and utilized three different analytical methods: High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Capilary Electrophoresis (CE) with UV detection, and Titration.

Though all three methods have their place in the scientific community, Titration is the most commonly used method in the food industry when determining vitamin C (ascorbic acid) content. However, there is a critical detail within the Titration method many companies miss when testing raw cacao. The method of Titration is unable to differentiate the vitamin C (ascorbic acid) from the vitamin's analogs. The result is what is known as a "false positive."

This is why, at Navitas Naturals, we use HPLC when testing raw cacao's vitamin C content. The HPLC method looks directly for vitamin C (ascorbic acid), and not just the analogs. Additionally, after sending samples of our products to another lab to test using the CE method, the reports returned consistent the HPLC results.

We have now also tested one of the largest raw cacao brands in the United States using the Titration and HPLC methods. And yet again the results confirm our previous conclusion that raw cacao has no vitamin C (ascorbic acid) present.

Cacao is a tremendously beneficial superfood, containing a wide spectrum of minerals and phytonutrients. It is important to be clear however, Vitamin C is not amongst these nutrients.

This has got to be one of the best juicing books I've seen. There are 50 recipes, all broken down by how they benefit you, rather than "here's some berry recipes". This book lists your juices based on topics like, losing weight, beauty and healthy aging or cleaning/detoxifying. I find that so much more useful and interesting to read. I can see referring to each section time and time again.

In addition to the clear ingredients and instructions is the nutritional info- quite helpful.

I've been a long-time juicer but usually only juice fruit. I forget how healthy it is to juice vegetables also, so will be trying more of these recipes. They do look yummy!

Juicing has got to be one of the best ways to improve our overall health and nutritional intake, and with this book and her 50 recipes I know I'll be juicing to my hearts content for a long time. Simple, easy to read and follow the recipes, and for the low price and many health benefits this is an easy 5-star book. Highly recommended.

It's a nice surprise to see a product in which you can see that they put a lot of thought into it's design. Read First Before Buy Norpro 3247 Deluxe Pastry Blender

I am puzzled by the one star review for this product. Though I did not purchase through Amazon, I am here searching for the product I own so that I can get more for friends. No one in my area carries them. I own the Norpro professional pastry blender. It looks identical to the item pictured here. (The four blades are not common on the other pastry blenders I've seen, and the design of this one is different enough from the standard Norpro blender that it is easy to differentiate.) I make my pastry with cold butter and this is the only pastry blender I have tried that doesn't bend under the resistance of the hard, cold, butter. All other blenders I have tried have such flimsy wires or blades that I can move them with my fingers. These blades do not bend under pressure whether from my fingers or the hard butter. I don't understand why even my local kitchen specialty store doesn't carry them. The "heavy duty" Norpro blender they carry is nowhere near as strong as this. If this truly is the product pictured, it is the best.

Our 33-yo vegan daughter requested this for her only Christmas present, so a number of family members went in to get it for her, even though we were shocked at the price. The very first thing she did was grind some nuts to a powder which took just seconds, and made a couple of smoothies the first minute she got home. This yogurt maker is great! The quality (so far) is good and making yogurt is easy and carefree. I have made yogurt without a machine by placing milk in pan in a low temp. oven for 8 hours. It turned out fine but having the oven on for so long bothered me and I made a mess transfering it to smaller containers for refrigeration. I know it's not necessary to use an oven -

room temp. is supposedly fine but my health trained brain says NO!

Using the automatic yogurt maker is so nice - pouring the milk into 7 different jars, placing the jars in the unit, covering unit with clear lid,

turning unit on, setting desired time, and walking away confident temp. is constant is the best way for me.

Oh, and the 6 oz. jars (with lids) are the perfect serving. You can make each jar a different flavor too...

I can not express how happy I am that I found this! I LOVE IT!!! From it's description, I'm sure you know that it's raw protein, NOT from animal products. I'm a raw vegan so this was definitely a great find. It mixes into smoothies and even just soymilk on it's own REALLY well. It doesn't really have any flavor, just that somewhat chalky texture that most protein powders have, but it's not bad at all, I actually like the slight chalky taste. My recipe I've been doing with this every morning is:

10 oz Organic Vanilla Soymilk
3 tsp Raw Cocoa Powder
1 tbsp Agave
1 Scoop of the Raw Protein

I have that with some ice and it's like a mocha iced latte, it's great! I would HIGHLY recommend this to ANYONE, were you are a vegan or not. Getting protein from natural, raw sources, now that's good for anyone! I love this and will for sure be continuing to have this EVERYDAY! Oh and it's quite large. I have on average 1-2 of the above drink a day and 1 of these will probably last me at least a month easy.

The #1 thing to remember for this device is that the rubber cap on the bottom of the cup pries off to reveal the battery compartment.

This is perfect for making protein and meal replacement shakes.

It's also perfect for making BulletProof Coffee (do a web search if you don't know what that is). This device is not built to handle hot beverages, so you have to be careful to avoid cracking the plastic and ruining the blender. Here's the trick: start your tap water running cold, place this blender under the flow of water, then turn your tap to hot. As the blender fills pour out the old water. When the water is hot, turn off the tap and cap the blander full of hot water. When the coffee is ready, pour out the water, drop in your ingredients, fill with coffee and replace the lid. Now you can safely blend a perfect cup of bulletproof coffee!

Last thought: I haven't had the problem reported here about long term bad smells. I did notice one morning a sour milk smell coming from the cup. I hadn't cleaned the cup well enough after the previous morning's protein shake. Some dish detergent and hot water (and then turning blending ON) fixed that in a snap. Never let your drinks sit in the cup for hours (especially if the liquids dry out in the cup) and smell won't be a problem.

Update 1-10-13: The first one sprang a leak about two months after my first review, so I got a new one. Same kind. This one I have used about 6 days a week, sometimes twice a day, to mix meal replacement drinks. I put in a lithium battery about 4 months ago and it's still going. These are cheap cups that I don't expect to be extremely durable, but they are more reliable than you'd think and still the best small-portion drink mixers I have found. My 5 star rating stands.

I was lucky enough to hear Amber speak at the Dallas Veggie Fair in the fall of 2011. I am a fan of her blog, and was very excited to see she was one of the speakers. Amber introduced us to her Five Minute Blondies and Tahini Kale salad, both were easy to make and were fabulous. I've made her blondies so many times I can't even count, and I have to hide them from my omnivore family so I can have some. The Kale-Tahini salad is great too. I've made it plenty of times and am love how easy it is to make. At the Veggie Fair Amber said she had a book coming out that included a whole chapter on KALE CHIPS! I'm pretty sure I pre-ordered the book the minute I got home.

I didn't realize how much I would appreciate the "cooked" options. While I eat high raw, I don't own a dehydrator. Making kale chips are still possible without the fancy dehydrators that are used. In addition to the cooking options, if you don't have an item in a recipe, check out the substitutions at the end of the recipe that Amber includes.

Out of my raw cookbooks, Amber's is my favorite. Easy to comprehend, and full of information, you need this book! Almond Butter Ice Cream is amazing, I can't wait until it's 100 degrees--I will make it every day! I never thought I'd eat, let alone be able to create Vermicelli with Pecan Cream sauce, but I did and it is out of this world. Deconstructed sushi bowls are wonderful and a staple every other day or so for my lunch, and just wait for the Rice Pilaf recipe! By far the best cookbook in my collection.

I first tried the printed instructions that came with the spare part, over and over dozens of times, and my husband did, too. No result, just idle spinning and mounting frustration. Next, I tried blocking the motor wheel with a screwdriver inserted from the bottom to unscrew the coupling from the top, but it was difficult to find the right spot and I feared I'd break off some motor blades or damage the wires. Then I tried tiny flat spanners in my toolbox to stabilize the socket to screw off the coupling on top of it - but although the spanners fit under the coupling, they were still the wrong size: more idle spinning.

Then I tried Lara Docgirl's approach - (1) place the unplugged blender base on a tabletop, facing you, base down/coupling up; (2) take a punch or a flathead screwdriver, and place it against one of the coupling teeth that is furthest away from you; (3) strike the back of the screwdriver with a small hammer or mallet. The result will spin coupling clockwise. It may take several tries, but the coupling will eventually spin clockwise faster than the motor, and it will begin to unthread;(5) unscrew the old coupling, and screw the new coupling into place (counterclockwise). Note that the new coupling will tighten itself every time you use your blender, so no need to worry about tightening it too much.

Hey presto! It worked (although my original coupling was so worn that it had no teeth left - I just let the screwdriver sink in the rubber while hitting it lightly with a rubber mallet) - in about 20 seconds, or about 5 taps the old coupling came off, no real force needed! After an hour of frustration!!! Now I'm off to fix the margarita to celebrate!!!

Best Review on Oster BLSTPB WBL 250 Watt Blender Powder

I've had this blender about 3 weeks now and I use it about 4 times a week. It works really great. I like to make fruit smoothies to replace lunches some days. I don't use the drinking attachment that goes with it. I drink these at home, and just pour them in a cup. The only thing that is a negative for me is I use ice cube trays for ice, and it wont break up the large pieces of ice. I have to put some ice cubes in a ziploc bag and smash them with a tenderizer to break them up lol. My favorite smoothie is soy milk, crunchy peanut butter, banana, tofu, and honey. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a single serving size blender.

Update:
After about 2 months of use, the part where the blender attaches to the base began to rub. I would put the cup on the base, and the motor spins the metal teeth inside. The part where they attach is made of rubber, which would get very hot and melt. After a while it stopped spinning because it didn't fit together anymore. I was very disappointed with this!!

This thing tears through ANYTHING in just seconds. Cold food is luke warm in a minute, then steaming hot in 5. It could probably be used as a mulcher, and if it cost less i would try it. This thing roars. The 2+ hp motor is ridiculously strong. It has a 7 year warranty included, comes with several cookbooks full of recipes (one of them is a whole binder full) and an instructional dvd presented by Iron Chef Michael Symon in which he takes you through several recipes and tells you many features and instructions on care. This thing takes about 30 seconds to clean, by the way. Just fill it with hot water and a drop of dish soap, then turn it on for 30 seconds. Rinse, and you're done.

First of all, I'd like to say that before I started taking this I was at 137lbs. I'm 5'9, 29 years old, and in great shape! I've been using this product for about a year now and I'm at 176lbs. I gained 20lbs over the first 90 days and I haven't lost it. I'm an EXTREMELY hard gainer so if this works for me then it can work for anyone. If you can't gain weight taking this then you obviously don't know what you're doing. It says "meal replacement" but come on, if you're hitting the gym and trying to bulk then this shake needs to be a meal supplement...taken between meals and before bed. I take 3 servings a day (only 1 scoop though) and I've had the best results ever. I don't mean to put anybody down, but in the world or lifting taste is a luxury, so if you give it poor reviews due to that then you're kind of foolish. Fortunately, true mass tastes really good and is easy on the stomach. I like this product so much, that I decided to write my first review on Amazon! I'm into fitness and drink protein shakes daily between meals. Sometimes it's a challenge during the work week because I'm often in different locations and don't always have access to a blender. I looked on Amazon to see if I could solve my problem and saw this bottle. It looked a bit 'gimmicky' but it has many great reviews, so I bought it.

Pro's
1. It Works! - I can fill it with any amount of protein powder, pack it in my bag,
and head out to work. When it's time to drink a shake, I fill it with some water
and shake it until it's done. There are a few small lumps left, but the quality
of blending is so much better than I've ever used or even expected.

2. Seals Well - One worry I had was that the opening wouldn't seal well while closed
and my shake would leak out during or after use (until I got home to actually wash
it). I was wrong. The small lid snaps on tightly and doesn't leak. Hooray!

3. Cleans Easily - The jar portion has a very wide opening which makes it easy to
reach inside with a sponge. The wire ball cleans easily too as it's made of
stainless steel, so nothing sticks to it.

4. Affordable - Nice.

Con's
1. Tight Lid - As I mentioned, the lid is very tight and prevents leaks. For me it's
great, but I could imagine that for people who have difficulties opening bottles
or for those who lack hand strength, this may be an issue.

2. Illegible Measurements - I can barely read the measurements on the side of the
bottle and I have excellent eyesight, so this will definitely be a problem for
some. At the same time, when I'm filling the bottle with water, it already has
the powder inside it anyways so the measurements are sort of useless for me anyway.

Some reviews mentioned leaking, but I never experienced it... it may be because I screw on the top fairly tightly. This is a solid, well-made product and recommend it highly for anyone who needs to mix powder and water anywhere they happen to be.

We bought this mixer when we purchased the Kidkraft Deluxe Let's Cook Kitchen. It looks like it belongs with the kitchen!

My three-year-old son has always been a little wary of my Kitchen-Aid mixer. He loves to help me cook, but it makes him nervous when I turn the mixer on. So, we bought this mixer in hopes that he would understand and be more comfortable with the sounds of the real one. He absolutely LOVES this mixer. It comes with two different sets of beaters that are pretty easy to switch out, and it can come off the stand to be a hand-held mixer.

The only problem I have now is that my son is comfortable with putting his hands in the beaters while they are going because they just stop moving when too much pressure is put on them. I'm going to have to keep a very close eye on him when we're using the real mixer so he will not try the same thing! I do like that it does not hurt the toy when he does put his hands on it, though. The motor doesn't struggle or anything, so I assume that is what it is supposed to do.

Oh, and there are two options for turning the mixer on- you can turn it all the way on so the beaters just continually turn, or you can turn it on "half-way", so the child gets to push a big round button to make it go in short spurts. I think that is a lot of fun, too!

To address the negative reviews (currently there are only a few and they are only because their particular mixers did not work at all), I guess you just have to make sure to buy this mixer from a good company, like Amazon, who will give you a full refund or exchange easily. I think with any toy that runs on batteries and has a motor, there are going to be a few that do not work for whatever reason. To me, this toy is worth the trouble of exchanging it for a new one if it did not work initially. My son loves it very much!

I don't know if it is smart, but it definitely delivers a consistent, fine coffee ground very suitable for any espresso machine, and it does it w/o using the extreme choices on the dial ... meaning I could get even more fine a ground if I desired. (For those Turkish coffee lovers for example.) This machine works exactly as advertised. And my coffee experience has improved 100% because of it. I love a good coffee and a good grinder IS the key to making good coffee.

I would have LOVED to buy one of those $500+ blenders (Blendtech or Vitamix, etc.) but that is just not in our budget (now, and probably ever!) But with this blender, I do not feel like I am missing out on ANY of those features, power, quality, of the higher-priced ones. Does an amazing job on pretty much everything I've thrown at it. I LOVE the pre-programmed "chop food" mode, which is absolutely perfect for making salsa, guacamole, chopping onions, and MUCH more. (no more omion-tears!)

For making perfect salsa, I put in 1/2 quart of home-canned tomatoes, press the "chop" mode, and just let it pulse 3 times, and turn off. Remove from pitcher and add the 2nd half of the quart, repeat. Leave just a little liquid in pitcher,add onions, garlic, spices, etc., pulse a few times, and it's done! OR, just add 1 packet of Mrs. Wages Classic Salsa Mix, .8-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 12) mix to the quart of chopped tomatoes and stir, and eat! Takes about 3 minutes, start to finish. :)

The blades on this thing can be LETHAL though... VERY sharp, very efficient. When cleaning, use extra care, and/or use a scrub-brush so you don't need to get your fingers too close. (or clean in dish-washer, but I hand-wash because I like it to be always clean and ready to use, not sitting in the dishwasher waiting for the next load!)

first my order can on march 2 and it wasnt supposed to be delivered till at least march 5. then the instructions to put this together was probably one of the best ive seen in a long long while. the parts were all labeled correctly. even the hardware bags were labeled. also the labels of the parts are part of the plastic not stickers so there is a slim to none chance that the pieces can be miss labeled. it took me about 20 minutes to put together. i was in a hurry and jammed through it. but thats got to say something for how well every thing was labeled and instructed. i have 3 scooters, folded, 2 skateboards, 2 large water guns, slip and slide, a little step 2 ride on motorcycle and there is still room for more. :DDD my porch is now nice and clutter free. one thing though, i was so excited i screwed one of the screws too tight and busted the plastic. but the bench is still strong. i dont think it hurt it too much. so be very careful not to tighten the screws too tight. and i would probably invest in some caulk or sealant and seal the floor on the inside of the bench i can see that as a potentially problem with the way it rains around here. all in all however i am so happy i choose this storage bench and the company as well. their shipping was awesome and their prices... well it was better than walmart... hahaha... you wont be disappointed! :DDD

At first I thought I was crazy for wanting to buy a blender for this much money. But I can honestly say after one month of using it at least 5 times a week and some times more, I don't regret buying it. I have done everything in it so far and they have turned out great. I made plantains with milk, sugar and some water, I have always had to put it through a strainer with any of my previous blenders, not with the VItamix. Even my carrot / apple juice came out very good. My husband who thought this was another appliance with a high tag price is amazed of how I've been using it and what it can do. And I am just as impressed with it. This is my first time owning one and I will never go back to a regular blender. The best feature for me is the presets. All i do is just put everything in it and let it stop on it's own. I love the self-cleaning option as well. My only small issue is that it's not as quiet as I thought it would be. It's actually louder than any cheapie blender that I have owned. It's not soo much that it is an issue for me but as how it is being advertised that it is quieter that the previous ones. Since I didn't have one before this model, it makes me think how much louder were they. Hope this helps anyone who is skeptical of buying one.
