KitchenAid Blender Coupler 9704230 Removal

When my rubber coupler broke...I had no idea how to replace it or even where to find one or even what the thing was called. The Kitchenaid website didn't give me any information. I thought...OMG...how can I find a replacement or am I stuck buying a brand new blender when this one workded perfectly fine just the coupler was busted. I was looking at the prices of the blenders and I wasn't in the mood to dish out another $100.00 plus to replace one that was working just fine. It took lots of research on my behalf to find out what it was called and where to buy a new one since I had received no email back from kitchenaid customer service. When I did finally get a response back it would cost me $25.00 to ship it to a repair center and have them fix it and to have it sent back. I had already ordered this kit and after reading many reviews I decided on getting the tool with the coupler. Yes the instructions didn't show much, but it was really easy to figure out. Once I got my pliers and the tool in position and did the righty-loosy it was off in a matter of maybe 5-10 seconds. Doing it by hand is never going to work...unless you are very strong. I unscrewed the damaged rubber coupler and put the new one on. Now my blender works like a charm. For anyone really asking themselves do I really want to purchase the tool...trust me you WILL NOT BE SORRY! I am so glad I purchased the tool. Now if my coupler ever breaks again...I can change it in a snap! I plan on ordering extra couplers just in case mine ever breaks again.

  1. I read several of the reviews of the coupler. After close observation of my own blender, I realized I would not be able to remove the torn coupler without a special tool, which I didn't know was available. Then I came upon this set of tool and coupler, which I immediately ordered, with my fingers crossed hoping it would work out. After a quick delivery (in my mailbox in 5 days, including a weekend), I opened the package. The directions that come with the coupler do not explain how to use special tool. However, it was pretty easy to figure out: Use the tool to hold the knob in place on which the coupler is attached (without the tool, the knob will turn in the same direction as the loosening direction). Use a plier to turn the coupler clockwise, while using the tool to hold the knob still, thus preventing the knob from turning as you loosen it. Note, the coupler must be loosened by turning it righty-loosey, opposite of the usual righty-tighty. For me, this could not be done without the pliers. But with the pliers, it came loose in 10 seconds. Once loosened, I unscrewed the old coupler and screwed on the new coupler. On a scale of 1-5 in difficulty, I would give this a 1.5.

  2. When my husband and I ordered the replacement rubber coupler for our Kitchenaid blender, I wanted to order the removal tool as well. He took the guy's advice in the other review and did not order it. After working on my blender for nearly half an hour attempting to remove the coupler according to the directions, he had a blister on his finger, had chisled little bits of metal off my blender base, was in a terrible mood, and he still couldn't remove it. I tried too, following the instructions closely, to no avail. We ordered the removal tool combo the next day and when it arrived, had the coupler off and replaced in less than a minute. The blender works perfectly once again. I wish I had ordered the removal tool in the first place.

  3. My coupler broke a couple of months ago and I bought this kit. I was skeptical because the material of the new coupler was obviously different from the original coupler. Also the instructions that come with the kit are very misleading though. You want to position the "remover tool" and then hold that position and rotate the broken coupler as if you were holding a nut and unscrewing a bolt.

But many months later, the blender is working and the coupler looks just fine. If your coupler is broken, buy this kit!

  5. the caveat: i had to ask a technician friend to unscrew the old one, but the tool is basically to hold the nut underneath the broken rubber coupler while you turn the coupler (and READ THE DIRECTIONS on which way to turn each!). slick as anything, it was off, and the new was on and working perfectly. great cheap fix--now i have the tool and if it happens again (the last coupler ran for almost 10 years) i know how to fix an otherwise perfect appliance. way cheaper than a new blender!

  6. The only problem is that I paid more for this item because it came with a tool to remove the old coupler. The tool is not needed, It just added to the price of the item. The coupler by itself and a thick flat head screwdriver is all that is needed. The tool itself bends and becomes useless after a while.
