  2. If you are already reasonably fluent with Blender's basic commands from having built and rendered a few simple models on your own and now want to progress further, this is the book for you. Wisely, the author has not attempted to cover every aspect of Blender but has chosen instead to cover modeling, sculpting, materials, and rendering in better detail and with more really useful background explanations than any other Blender book I've ever seen. I've read this book from cover to cover and by far the worst part was coming to the end of it! I hope that the author is planning more books like it. ...Bob

  3. I have the iPad version as well as the book. The book has not arrived yet. The Ipad version is wonderful. Finally, publishers are taking some advantage of the possibilities of digital books. The pictures are not part of the text, but instead are embedded and independent. So, when an illustration is required, I can enlarge it to the full screen size of the iPad. This makes seeing the illustrations really clear and very nice. This book may be a little advanced for me. I scanned the entire thing and I am intimidated by its depth. As a beginner (2 years), the instructions may not be cookie cutter enough. But, the author intended that and makes it clear from the start. I think this book will be very helpful, and with an excellent index with hypertext, it will be a useful reference as well.

  4. I have always wanted to use Blender and learn more about 3D design. This book, Blender Master Class, was a perfect start for me. After reading this book and following along with the projects I actually know where the tools I need are and the basics of getting up and running. The 3D world is very complex and intimidating if your brand new, this book helps so much.

It does not cover game development, or the animation and rigging features of Blender. But that's good, especially for a beginner like me. I will eventually graduate to those features but you have to learn how to walk before you can run.

The author does an awesome job of explaining some of the fundamentals of 3D art while guiding you how to pull it off with Blender and GIMP. The GIMP stuff was a bonus!

The book covers gathering reference material, particale systems, text baking, and more.

If you are getting started, or know someone who is, get this book! It will save you time and get you grounded in the tools as well as thinking about the fundamentals of 3D design.

  5. Design skills are quickly becoming a part of the necessary knowledge base of professionals in a wide variety of fields. Plenty of courses, online and off, free and fee-based, are cropping up to demystify the process of design. Open source design software is also paving the way to help us evolve from media consumers into media creators.

If 3D design is on your wish list of skills, you're in luck. Blender is an incredibly popular open source 3D design suite with a massive user community. No Starch Press has just published the book Blender Master Class by author and professional 3D artist Ben Simonds. The book guides you step-by-step through 3 intricate projects by teaching you modeling, sculpting, materials, and rendering skills. The book also explains how Blender interfaces with GIMP, an open source graphic design program, and includes a DVD with all of the relevant files for the projects described in the book.

Simonds makes Blender, a sophisticated program, approachable by breaking down its basic features one by one. Blender is used by many artists for animation, simulation, and game design. However, these features are not covered in this book. Simonds focused his efforts on the niche that needed to be filled - helping new Blender users understand the basics of creating still images.

With this book you can quickly get started on the task of getting those 3D designs out of your imagination and into the world. While Blender can feel overwhelming at first because of all of its bells and whistles, you'll have Simonds with you on every step of the journey as a guide and supporter.
