Bigger, Faster, Stronger than the Magic Bullet

Big Boss 15 Piece 300 Watt Countertop

We got this to replace an existing single use smoothie maker. Right out of the box, you've got all you need to make both smoothies and anything else that you would want. The kid includes 3 cups plus a variety of lids. The interesting thing about the Big Boss is that you have to screw the blade into the cup. You then flip the cup plus blade over and blend it that way. Initially we had concerns about the cup being upside down and leaking but the seal has been fine after a month of heavy usage. One thing to mention is that because you flip the entire cup over, we found that it really gets all of the chunks out. We make smoothies for my son with a lot of vegetables in them. They come out very smooth with no lumps so that my son thinks he's not drinking down a ton of vegetables. :)

Because there are so many lids and cups, we found that we make more smoothies and blended drinks than before. The noise is no noticeably louder than our previous smoothie maker. My only complaint might be that when unscrewing the lid, there are plastic tabs that stick out from the cup that annoy me. But that's really pretty minor. It's been a great kit for the money.

  1. So far I've only made smoothies and coffee drinks with this, so I can only comment on them. It was very fast and easy to use. It mixed everything well and crushed the ice in my coffee drink, other small blenders I've used have just sort of pushed the ice around, but this one really crushed it. I love that the mixing glasses are large and they have a travel lid that you can use to drink out of or to pour out what you've made without a mess. It's very easy to clean up too, it just all goes in the dishwasher (except the base of course). I would highly recommend this blender and can't wait to try out the recipies and ideas included with it.

  2. I'm pretty sure this item's been discontinued. Shame...it's great.

Now, I have to say, I loved my Magic Bullet. It lasted about 7 years and, although not perfect, I was able to make great smoothies, grated Parmesan, and a few other things with it. People who don't like the Magic Bullet aren't reading the directions. (I mean, sure, you can't really chop stuff w/the Bullet -- it PULVERIZES everything, but still...)

The problems w/the Magic Bullet were generally design issues. The cups are rounded on the bottom with little fins to help them stand on a counter. As such, the cups didn't stand upright in a refrigerator at all. Also, the cups come with lips that you twist on (after you remove the blades) so you can sip comfortably out of them, but they're oddly thick on the Magic Bullet.

Well, the Big Boss fixes those things and has some other improvements....

Firstly, the cups are better made. The plastic is weightier, thicker on 'em, so they almost feel like REAL glasses. The lips you twist on have a better design -- they taper down. The cups also have a convex bottom, which makes everything mix better. The cups have FLAT bottoms, so they sit better on any surface.

There's even a cover you can use for grated cheese and it twists to keep the cheese covered and fresh. (As opposed to Magic Bullet's grated cheese cover which is just a lid with holes which has no cover to keep the cheese fresh.

The Big Boss has one twist-on blade -- as opposed to Bullet's two -- and it works FAR better than either of the Bullet's blades. Everything I make (mostly smoothies using semi-frozen fruit) is made in HALF the time as compared to my Magic Bullet.

I've not yet tried chopping with it or making hummus, a standard thing I made with my Bullet, but if either of those end up not working w/the Big Boss, I'll post an update saying so. Otherwise, assume everything was AOK.

  3. This is one Blender that lives up to it's title. So far I've used it on everything from mixing energy drinks, to cutting onions, to crushing ice. Each time it's done the job as stated. Then you give it a good "power rinse" under the faucet, then wash it. Very simple.

It comes with a nice instruction booklet. Almost dummy proof to operate.

The only thing that I can see some people looking for would be the containers to have measured markings. However I measure before adding, so that's not a problem for me. But I can see where some would want it.

This is a pretty straightforward blender/mixer. It does everything it's supposed to.

  4. At first I was skeptical about this blender, like I am about all those gadgets you see on TV and the Big Boss claims about what it could do. No more. It grinds coffee beans so coffee grinder in our kitchen. It makes smoothies quick as a wink, so no more big blender in our kitchen. It purees tomatos in an instant, so my wife's famous marinara sauce is now made with real tomatos and not the canned kind and it's better than Newman's Own as far as I'm concerned (Honey if you're reading this, your's is better, it really is).

I don't know what more to say other than it chops ice into snowy crush, so you can make those great coffee drinks and say goodbye to Starbucks. It cleans easily and it's not an ugly looking thing in our kitchen. We're in love love relationship with this blender at our house.

  5. I love personal size blenders. My wife and I very much enjoy smoothies and have them as easy breakfast meals regularly. Until recently I've relied on my Hamilton Beach blender, which I actually really like. I've owned other small blenders in the past from several different manufacturers, including the Magic Bullet (which I did not like). This is the best of the bunch, and here is why:

    1) Multiple 18oz cups which allow you to prepare several smoothies before having to wash everything. They also allow you to prepare the smoothy ahead of time in your fridge or freezer, pull it out, blend for a minute, and hit the road, delicious drink in hand.

    2) POWERFUL 300 Watt motor. This is the single strongest selling point of this blender: it grinds, chops, blends, or liquifies FASTER than other blenders. It doesn't strain when faced with a full cup of ice or frozen fruit, it just rips right through everything I throw at it. I've never had an issue with the Big Boss losing power during blending or having it strain to get the job done. It blends like a boss.

    3) Doesn't leak. So this one seems like a no-brainer for a blender, but virtually every other personal sized blender I've owned has leak issues either where the O-rings seal the cup to the blender base, or at the top where the blender cover is attached (that is my main issue with my Hamilton Beach blender--it leaks out the top when blending stuff). This one doesn't leak at top or bottom, and the locking lids and storage lids actually stay in place really well.

    4) Overall quality and design is superior with the Big Boss. Everything works the way it is supposed to. I'm very pleased with it as a system, and like that I can get more cups pretty cheaply if I want to at some point.

One note: While you CAN use this blender to grind up coffee beans, I would not recommend that. The proper way to grind coffee is with a bur grinder, which does not heat up the beans through excess friction and makes a much nicer cup of coffee, especially if you use a french press. Sorry, my coffee snob is showing...

This blender has supplanted my old trusty Hamilton Beach, which admittedly was half the price of this blender, but does not come with any extra cups or lids, and has a motor with half the power of this one. The Magic Bullet is also very underpowered compared to the Big Boss. If you want a high quality, powerful blender in a small package, this is the one. Highly recommended.

  6. thing has been working for a couple of weeks, no issues. smashes ice, blends well, frozen fruit no problem. 300 watt power is no joke. easy, convenient, and extra cups and lids a plus. no issue with motor or clean up. would recommend it. have had magic bullet also in the past, and this is comparable. caution with lid and motor unit, could be activated by pressing down without cup attached.

  8. I had a Bella Cucina 17-pc. Rocket Blender before it broke and bought this.

I wish I never bought the other one, because the Big Boss is better made and blends better.

I use this only for mixed drinks, smoothies and protein shakes. Does a GREAT job on ice, and I am very picky about that.

Hope this review helps. As someone else said, you cannot go wrong for the price.
