Best Review on Fox Run Craftsmen Pastry Blender
My mom has one of those pastry cutters that's like a row of stationary blades, but when it came time to stock my own kitchen, I decided to go an even more traditional route and try the wire pastry cutter. I could not be happier with my decision. The wires are heavier than those on a whisk, and they allow you to blend pastry dough quickly and effectively. There is a metal thumb rest on one side of the handle that is not shown in the picture that gives extra leverage and comfort. I have only used this to make biscuits and pie crust with (relatively soft) shortening, so I don't know how it would behave with a harder butter dough. For my purposes though, it's perfect. This is much easier to clean than my mom's cutter, too. The round wires do not slice up a kitchen sponge and no dough gets caught between them, even up where they join to the handle.

The simplicity of the design of this kitchen tool led me to purchase it instead of a higher priced one, and I wanted a pastry blender without sharp blades. You probably can't use this for extremely heavy dough but it's perfect for pie pastry, biscuit dough, and pasta dough. I haven't tried bread dough with it yet but it will probably be fine for most of the types of bread I make.
BalasHapusI love the feel of the handle in my hand - not too big, not too small. It's not a bulky tool and it moves easily, and thanks to the thumb rest (not pictured) you get a little more leverage and stability when working with dough that's a little stout. This item is perfect for the jobs I want it to do, and for the price it's unbeatable.
I have owned this pastry blender for at least three years now and I love it. The wires are stiff enough to easily cut together the fat (be it butter or shortening) and the flour without bending, yet it is simple to run your fingers over to clean them off (unlike the pastry blenders that have blades). I use this tool a LOT... at least 3 times a month, usually more, for pie crust, pastry dough, scones, etc and I would recommend it to anyone looking for something sturdy and useful.

BalasHapusI grew up with this kind of pastry cutter, and it's hard to find the wire ones now; most supermarkets only carry the rigid blade kind. This is perfect not only for pastry but for guacamole.
BalasHapusThis is an inexpensive wire pastry blender and looks exactly like the ones from fifty years ago. It's made in Taiwan rather than mainland China, so you can kick the commies in the crotch with your six bucks. I prefer using the wire type as I can clean out the spaces with my fingers while I'm cutting butter into the flour base, not something I'd recommend with those blade types. For those who are continually mangling their blenders; precut the cold butter into smaller pieces or don't chill the butter quite so cold when you don't have to.
BalasHapusFYI: After I purchased and wrote this review amazon off loaded this to a "marketplace seller" and the price went from $6 to $10. You might want to table this purchase until the price comes back down.
I was looking for a pastry blender for awhile, because at Christmas I received the most beautiful natural wood french rolling pin. But all the sturdy (read: not dollar store) ones I saw looked too modern, or had plastic handles. And newer-style pastry blenders have these awful twisted arms that are a pain to clean.... this one is classic, STURDY, and beautifully complements my all natural wood kitchen accessories! I love it. Almost as much as I love making pie :)
